My 240 wagon was experiencing terrible gas mileage and a bad shudder when braking in traffic, which would sometimes turn into a stall when gas was given to accelerate from the stop. It got to the point where the car was noticeably shaking on start-up, and frequently stalling at stop signs/lights. It seemed fine on the highway. Eventually I had to keep giving it gas at stops while braking just to prevent the sputtering and stalling on acceleration from a stop. Sometimes it would also not start after sitting.
After a few stalls at intersections, where failed re-start attempts drained the battery, a jump stopped working. Car was towed, tune up was done, new battery installed. Car still shook on start-up, and sputtered after stops sometimes, but didn't stall and die. Gas mileage was still terrible.
Car was not giving any codes, I got 1-1-1, and my regular mechanic said he could not retrieve the codes. He determined that the mass air flow sensor was getting incorrect voltage, so replaced it. The gas mileage improved to just under 23 mpg, but the car still shook and felt like it was going to stall sometimes when accelerating from a stop.
Then today I was sure it was going to stall in stop and go traffic. It seemed to rev and then about die and I had to hold down the gas pedal when braking to lessen the shaking and shuddering and to (it seemed) keep it alive. Then it seemed to go away enough so that I didn't need to give it gas when braking, but it was still shaking and there was a noticeable vibration from both pedals.
I've spent a lot of money trying to fix whatever is wrong (and on towing) and I'm sick of feeling like the car could die at any time and leave me stranded. I thought I would check here to see if anyone has any idea what could be wrong. If it helps at all with a diagnosis- the car gives me a shock every time I get out.
