regrading an 1989 240 m47 transmission 200

with this transmission on a bench does anyone know how the input shaft is supposed to act when the shifter is placed into each of the 5 gears, neutral and reverse?

by this i mean, "should" the input shaft rotate with the normal resistance based upon each gear ratio and in turn cause the output shaft to rotate as well?

clearly in neutral there is no resistance so it should spin freely?

or does the input shaft turn slightly and stop when each gear is engaged?

obviously i have next to no experience with these transmissions.

logically it would seem the input shaft would turn at different levels of resistance as 1-5 is used which would cause the output shaft to rotate. but this is supposition on my part not borne of experience.
