Not a bad hose on in-tank pump after all...the mystery resumes 200 1993

I had previously reported that a stalling problem was caused by a deteriorated hose in the gas tank... I was apparently incorrect, and am at a loss.

Symptoms:

A week ago, it started rough and died when put in gear.
It had ~2/3rds tank and was parked on a slight incline.
I filled it to 3/4ths, and it ran fine for ~50 miles, even with a several stops.

Someone here suggested it was a hole in the accordion tube on the in-tank pump.
Sounded spot on, so I purchased a new Gates black gas-proof hose, a new filter sock, and o-ring from IPD. I drove the car for several days with no problem at full to 2/3rds. At 2/3rds, it stuttered on hills, which reinforced the "bad hose" diagnoses in my mind.

Last night I opened it up using my trusty Bentley manual and a home-made bung tool. No problem.

Unfortunately, the accordian hose did not appear damaged... I plugged one end and blew on it hard with no apparent air holes. Worse yet, the black Gates tube from IPD was too big. Fit like socks on a rooster. I put the original accordian tube back on and really tightened the clamps... I hoped they were loose and it was sucking air around the clamp. I also replaced the filter sock...hoped the old one was clogged and causing excess pull on the pump, but it looked okay and I could blow air through it easily.

Drove it today on full tank:
Generally starts rough...lots of stuttering and sounds fuel starved.
Died at the first stop light. When idling, surged and hesitated about every 8 seconds.
Once running, all smooth while in gear running on a level road for 20 miles.
Stuttered again while driving up an incline driveway slowly.

I'm at a loss.
Pinholes in the accordian tube? Not likely with a full tank.
