Oil pump drive bolt failure

I'm not a metallurgist, so my opinion is based on experience only.
I've been around welding amd machinery manufacturing for over 45 years and have specified and used many different grades of bolts made from various materials.
So for what that is worth.....

The bolt looks hardened to me.
I say that because of the appearance of the bolt, it's surface and the way that the bolt fractured.
I would guess it failed because it was over tightened during it's installation.
Either that or it was supporting a heavy load under a severe vibration.
Sometimes a lower grade (softer) bolt will work better in that type of environment.
If I was really curious about the hardness of the bolt I would try to score it with a punch. If it won't score, or is extermely hard to score, the metal is hardened.....either that or have it tested in a lab.
