240 DL manual shift OD wires 200

How does one go about removing and replacing the OD switch on a 1986 240 DL? It is a manual shift. It may be the button or the wires because when I giggle the handle it goes into OD fine. If I need to replace the wires how in the world does the rubber knob come off the metal shifter? Or is it necessary to remove the knob at all?

I see the access for the two wires along the chrome shifter handle, when I tugged on the wires all seemed fine last week. I am thinking of replacing both the switch and the wires. Am I getting into a major project here?

Thanks
Ted
