Charging Problem 200 1992

I did undo the red exciter wire and cleaned it up yesterday but seems like a great test to narrow down the problem.

Why would the battery light flash a little with the old brushes but not come on (either running or with the key in run but engine not running) with the new brushes but still not charge. Seems like it may be the alternator, ground or brushes.
It looked like there was a springy connector in back of the alternator that the brush unit pressed against - I suspect that is a ground? It looked a little 'rusty' - may be something to check out
