AW 70 - wire/sensor on passenger side/looking at JY find 200

I have a JY find with a AW70 with good looking fluid and only about 167,000 miles on a sedan that was driven in to the yard. The motor was taken from the car by someone who works there and the transmission was left sitting under the car. The only problem is that I found a hole above the front cooling line where it appears a sensor of sorts use to be. Only real concern is that it appears to have been broken off inside the hole and while trying to remove it the white plastic piece fell into the transmission.

First concern is whether or not the plastic can be removed while replacing the pan or is it going to now be churned up inside by the gears?

What is that wire/sensor anyways? No mention of it on the FAQ and I can't find a good diagram to point it out.

Thanks.
