If it will run on the coffee can maybe the pick up tube or screen is blocked. Also find out the spec for the fuel pressure/volume it should deliver, if it can't make it find a replacement. OPs may think original is best, but if you can't make the price, a jobbered solution may do. Mercedes was close to state of the art in '72, but these days, a correct pressure FP could easily be better than OEM.
p.s. if the fuel pressure required is low enough maybe go hillbilly and put a gas can on the roof, don't think I have ever seen a Mercedes doing that :)
