Volvo 122 Temp sending Unit 120-130

My sending unit wire heats up to the point of melting the insulation off of the wire when the starter motor is cranking. Once the engine starts the heat is gone and the temp gauge works fine. The car has been sitting for the past 6 months and had not done this before. Any Ideas?
