The 940 will be rolling 300k miles within the next month or two!
The car had 93k on it when I purchased it in 2003.
We are traveling from Wisconsin to North Carolina in June, originally we'd planned on renting a mini-van for the trip, but a 10-day rental will cost over $700!! I might as well take $700 and light it on fire.
Plan B - I've bribed the 3 kids with $100 spending cash each to use on vacation if we take the 940. They're all over that! The rest I plan to use on preventive maintenance to assure a trouble-free trip.
My main concerns are the cooling system:
I replaced the radiator immediately after I purchased the car (that was 10 years and 200k ago) - it has metal tanks but is showing some corrosion.
The water pump was changed~ 100k ago. the donut seal is leaking due to oil dripping from the crank seal - this leak has been fixed.
The radiator hoses and heater hoses to my knowledge have never been changed - they are volvo hoses
The heater control valve was replaced ~4 years ago when the head gasket was replaced and head serviced. - it's the all plastic variety.
My plan is to replace everything prior to the trip.
Radiator (Nissens)
2 Rad Hoses (OEM)
2 Heater Hoses (OEM)
Heater Valve (Motorcraft metal and plastic version)
Water Pump, Thermostat
Timing Belt and Tensioner are about ready too
Sorry for the lengthy post but I've read comments like "20 year old hoses don't owe you another mile" so I think changing these is a no-brainer.
Is changing the radiator at 200k overkill? I'd sleep better at night if it were changed.
Were in it for the long haul with this car. I plan to hand it down to my son in 3 years when he turns 16.
Thanks in advance for all responses.
Matt
PS, we've driven this car on many many 1000+ mile road trips with never any problems, but something just feels different this time.
