HIGH BEAMS inoperable; turn signal switch problem/s 1993 240 200

New adoption: 1993 240 wagon!
First - turn signal switch, according to owner's manual, should have 2 positions (for each direction/turn) - "the driver can flash the turn signals by moving the turn signal lever to the first stop and holding it there."
I do NOT have two 'stops' only one - either turn signals are on, or off. (It does seem like the timing is a bit off when they turn off....)
HIGH BEAMS - when I pull (turn signal) lever back (toward steering wheel, me) as long as I am holding it in place I have high beams. There is no 'click' to turn high beams on (and then no 'click' to turn them off).
Suggestions?
This vehicle is NOT equipped with cruise control. IF it turns out that I need to replace the turn signal switch would it be an issue to put in a switch WITH cruise controls included - thinking to future where I might add cruise control (IF I can find components at a reasonable price!) or - just deal with appropriate switch when and if that time ever comes?
