Speaker Baffles? 200 1990

Let's say my window scrapers are pretty mint.. Are speaker baffles really needed?.. Again, baffles are the enclosed foam rubber "dealies" used to keep water and dirt out of the back of the speaker. A common brand is XTC... Just wondering if anyone thinks they're necessary, or has actually used them. There's a slim line version, but still. There's barely any room there. I just don't want to spend the money for speakers and ruin them because I didn't get these. Then, other people say they ruin the sound, because the speaker can't breathe. Any opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
