240 Hood Release Cable Questions 200

My recently acquired 1979 244 came with a broken hood release cable, and I'm trying to figure out the installation of the new one.

The Gemo replacement cable comes with a plastic grommet that clips onto the handle sleeve. Does this go on the engine side of the firewall, with the white sleeve running through the firewall and locking into it? I assume this is how it locks into place on the firewall?

In order for the hood to release, the lever on the latch gets pushed towards the passenger side. How does pulling the cable, which pulls in the opposite direction, release the hood? I am trying to visualize it, and I can't make sense of it. Sorry for the silly questions, there was not much for me to go on with the remnants of the old cable.

Thanks
Kurt
