Another A/C question 120-130

I have the stock, dealer installed A/C in my 62 2 dr, It works fine and has been converted to r134, or whatever the new refrigerant is called. Even though the engine is a B20, the A/C takes a lot of power to run. I've heard that my old compressor could be replaced with a more modern unit that would require less power for better results. But I have a feeling that I'm not just looking at changing the compressor because of the way the hose connections are configured. Mine just uses hose clamps not fittings. So this probably means new condener and evaporator too. Does tht sound right? The stock evaporator is of the type that hangs below th dash and is really in the way,
referring to the other post, is there a way to make this thing goe away or is it just a matter of finding one that is less obtrusive?
