Uncle jbroach,
What Uncle 42 says.
Use distilled or demineralized water when mixing up new coolant, if not using premix.
You know how to verify the hose condition, yes? If replacing the hoses, other than OEM Volvo, try the Continental brand. Conti is apparently OEM on Volvo for belts and coolant hoses.
Also, if iPd is out of stock on stuff, you can try Discount Import Parts in both Milwaukie and Beaverton (http://www.discountimportparts.com/ 1-877-659-7444). You also have access to innumerable well Volvo stocked salvage yards all over owld Portland, and you may be able to find a replaced all metal used Volvo 240 radiator for automatic 240s. Use a radiator service to test, boil out, and verify the used radiator. Verify the junkyard offers a warranty on the radiator in the event the radiator service finds the used radiator fails any of the tests they perform.
Also, the Portland-based Oregon Volvo Tuners (www.ovtuners.org) could possibly provide other recommendations, if you are not an OVT member already. Good group, the OVT. (They'll take Volvo drives en masse to from Portland to Astoria some early Saturday mornings to that fancy diner in Astoria that is really delicious and then up and down the coast from there, or at least they used to.)
I hope you did not let the coolant level get low? You did keep the coolant level topped up, yes? 1/2 gallon coolant is about 25% total coolant volume in the Volvo 240 engine coolant system. If no, keep an eye for any indication of cylinder head warp or gasket failure, such as coolant leaking into the oil or vice versa, or ignition cylinder pressure entering the coolant system causing excessive pressure in the expansion tank. Keep a nose out for coolant smell, too.
Power wash off your engine, make it clean, so you can more easily smell hot coolant (and oil) leaks anywheres. Hopefully your PCV flame trap is clean and clear (not clogged), yes?
Questions and comments?
My best to the Fulton Pub on SW Nebraska Avenue in John's Landing. Awesome.
