m47 trans ques. 92 245. best approach to fill m47? 200

hi volvo sages- the engine and trans in my 92 245 runs well at 225k. about a year ago i checked the oil level in my m47 od manual trans. it was about 1/2 inch below the fill hole. i filled it with the called for atf up to the lower edge of the hole. didnt leak then and doesnt now. however a few posters here have advocated tilting the car on one side and filling it actually overfilling it with the atf, putting the plug back and then lowering the car. apparently the thinking here is that when the car is back on the level the extra atf will keep the upper gear shafts and bearings submerged and better lubricated. is this a better approach or another myth in a long line of automotive mythologies? my concern is that not only may it be unnecessary but also such a practice may push out fluid through the input shaft bearing and seals or through the tail shaft. what is your best advice? thanks tons oldduke ps- one more question on trannies if you dont mind. in later 240s the m47 manual 5 speed od replaced the m46 manual 4speed with electrically actuated semi automatic overdrive 5th( the old borg warner type common in american cars of the 40s through the 60s). curious as to the reason this change was made. i surmise it was for two reasons : the m47 was probably more reliable and durable than the m46 with its shift knob button, solenoid and wiring. secondly guessing that the m47 over its life was more economical on mpg and repair costs. am i right or missing something?
