Headgasket info? 444-544 1958

In my most ambitious mechanical project to date, I am going to attempt to replace the head gasket in my B16 engine. Is there anything I should know in doing this? I looked at the volvo manual and there is no specific description for this procedure. They do mention a torquing sequence when removing and replacing the head bolts. Does the engine need to be parked in a particular position (like #1 cylinder at TDC) to begin? Any advice would be appreciated so that I am not totally surprised when I get things apart (and hopefully, back together). I currently have the water pump, carbs and valve cover off.
