main brake lights not working 700 1989

I have an 89 740 gl. Was pulled over by state patrol--no brake lights. The rear deck brake light is still working but the left and right main brake lights don't. It was suggested to me to replace the brake switch. When I got in there and adjusted it a bit the deck light still comes on but the main brake lights are still not working. If the brake switch controls both the deck brake light and the main brake lights and the deck brake light works when you hit the brake pedal then it makes sense to me that the brake switch is working. Yes?
The parking lights work, the running lights work and the backup lights work. The brake light bulbs are okay. Am I right in "assuming" that current is being delivered to both rear panels correctly if all the other lights are working?
Any help? Don't want to think it's a short since it's affecting both sides. Thanks in advance! Would it do any good to replace entire light modules? I 'spect they're not cheap...
