Uh-Oh.. something's broken 900 1995

Thanks to strong storms and a one-car garage occupied by my Amazon project, I've done almost no diagnostic work (yet), but I wanted to post the symptoms and see what folks think has happened..

The Car
1995 945 260k. B230FD (Normally Aspirated)
Runs with Mobil 1 oil, K&N air filter, Silicone coolant hoses, Magnecore plug wires, IPD anti-sways, many cosmetic and performance upgrades. Has received regular maintenance,

Situation
My wife called me Friday AM telling me that the car wouldn't start. I figured it was battery-related (it usually has been) so she took our spare car (1994 850).

The Problem
I briefly took a look at the 940 when I got home. Nothing obvious wrong. fluids are good, belts and hoses are good. A little corrosion on the battery terminal, but that's not consistent with the problem.

I started the car up. It was hard to get started. Idle was really rough. No CEL was thrown. the engine sounded a bit "off" and nearly died when I tried to rev it up. I was able to rev it up a bit and it started to sound a bit more like itself. I back it up and went to bring it around the house for a deeper investigation, when it stalled and wouldn't restart. I rolled it along side the house and left it be.

Ideas?
Thoughts that come to mind...

Timing belt jumped a tooth (or three)?

Something "electrical" in the engine management system or ignition system

CPS? (was replaced about 8 years ago)

Something "mechanical" in the engine?

I'm going to go check codes and clean the battery terminal, but I'm not sure where to start looking if those don;t fix it/give me clues....

Thoughts?

---edit---
got a 2-2-4 faulty ECT. Got a replacement for that.. doesn't seem consistent with the problem...

after cleaning up the battery terminals, the car started and idled nicely. there are "mechanical" noises coming from the "new" water pump I got from IPD. the thing is wobbly - looks like 2nd best is "junk"

Anyway, I tried to rev the engine and it died immediately. Basically the same problem. It was also hard to restart. The problem persists.

The OBDI diagnostics check out. No obvious errors.
