Recently bought a fine old 84 240DL and am in the middle of fixing many small things that the 2nd owner could not figure out. CA car with thin paint but no rust, uses no oil and definitely worth keeping. She is up on blocks and getting new U joints, bearings, bushings, tie rods etc.
Question #1: Are the pulleys from B23 & B230 interchangeable? I have done enough research to know that this model should have the pulley that comes apart and you add or remove shims to change AC belt tension. It appears that people have had problems with them breaking. Nope, this one is the newer solid pulley and there is no way to adjust it. The compressor is the older solidly mounted York. The rest of the engine, injection, etc. looks original so I am pretty sure the engine has not been switched out. I could be wrong.
Question #2: How can I tell for sure which engine this is?
Question #3: Where could I buy an original pulley?
Question #4: Unrelated, but another mystery: Any idea how to get the connector off of the coolant sensor that is buried under the intake manifold so I can test it? I guess Swedish mechanics must have very skinny and very long fingers. I have fought this for hours.
If I can't put her back to original I will manufacture some shims to put behind the compressor mount. It just doesn't seem to be the right thing to do.
