87 240 A/C Doesn't work - Where to start 200

I've had my 240 for about 12 years and the A/C has never worked. The compressor on my car was seized so I pulled a new one from a junkyard. Swapped in the new compressor but the connections were different. I believe I have it connected correctly, nothing happens when I turn the dial on the instrument cluster. I have no idea how the a/c system works and don't know where to start to hunt down my problem.
