timing belt basics 200 1991

I am getting my ass kicked by my 91 sedan. I replaced the timing belt and the car ran fine for several days and then would not start. I adjusted the belt and once again it ran great for several days and again would not start.

Here is my question. Does the timing belt line up on the alignment marks on every rotation? How can I tell for sure if the problem is not somewhere else and I am chasing my ail with the timing belt? I checked the crankshaft pulley and the alignment pin is not sheared. The tensioner seems to hold the belt tight.

Thanks
