I am 28 months into my 1991 245, up to this point I have enjoyed a car payment of 75.68/month. I passed CA smog last night with a new catalytic (muffler shop), exhaust gaskets, a flame trap, and some typical vacuum hose work.
I don't see tires, brakes, and oil changes as relevant to this comparison, as the total sum will be equal to, or less, than most newer cars, and always required. As for gas savings, we are not talking about a hundreds of dollars per month. Sure, my Volvo needs a bit of work, a wax job, and a new muffler, but that's ok with me, I love it the way it is.
Right now my fishing rods are locked in the back(they fit), there's a good chance I'll be parked in the dirt near some beach, or maybe run up the fire road to the good trails, hauling bikes in the back and maybe a quick car camp. I'm really not a new car guy, I've wanted one in the past, but I think I'd kill it. My 245 is the best SUV my money can buy.
