U-Haul Corporate BS 444-544

If anyone is considering to rent a U-Haul car transporter to haul your PV, they will not rent you one if you tell them it’s a Volvo PV.

I purchased a PV parts car some distance from my home and I could not tow it on a car dolly. I needed a flatbed trailer, so I called what I though was the local U-Haul. In actuality, they have a call centre. The call centre represented itself as my local U-Haul store. They asked a lot of questions, including what was the tow vehicle, hitch, tow rating etc. Then they ask what would be loaded on the trailer. I told them a 61 Volvo PV544.
The system did not recognize the vehicle and could not complete the transaction. So, I informed them that it is a light weight vehicle such as an MGB. They entered MGB and system said that it would not fit on the trailer, apparently too narrow.

So, on my home I stopped by the U-Haul place where they had a trailer out front, but they were closed. I measured the trailer dimensions; 44” gap in middle (minimum distance btwn tire inside face) and 77” btwn fenders. A PV will definitely fit on the trailer, the inside distance is no less than 46”.

Called U-Haul again and informed them that vehicle I want to transport will fit on the trailer. They needed a vehicle make and model to be able to rent the trailer. I told them to choose what ever would work for their system. The refused and I asked to speak with a manager. They switched me to another person to whom I had to repeat everything just to find out that she could not help. As it tuned out she was just another Mechanical Call Centre Person. She switched me to another Call Centre robot who attempted to ask the same questions again. At this point I gave up and hung up. These people are no more useful than an automated answering system.

Next day I stopped at the U-Haul counter and explained the situation. The experience was the same as with the call centre, except I was taking to the robot in person. They would not rent the trailer.

So, if you need a trailer, I would suggest that you use U-Haul if you absolutely have no other choice. To make sure that they do not refuse you, go on their website and start filling out their form but play with the vehicle selection to be loaded until it’s accepted.
