1983 verses newer MAIN fuel pumps? 200 1983

Howdy,
Years ago my 83 240 MAIN fuel pump went out so I replaced
it with a simular one from the pull and pay.
Now that one has gone bad and when I read up in the
Bentley it says that the pre-85 fuel pumps are different
than the newer ones? So while at the pull and pay I
only looked for pre-85 models and those fuel pumps
are a bit smaller and look simular to the intank fuel pumps.
I pulled one from a 83 and I am going to install it this
morning. I am going to have to switch out the wiring since
my 83 has the wiring plugs for the newer fuel pump.

Any advice or ideas?
Thanks in advance.
