740 stripped odometer gear 700

Odometer & trip meter stopped working on my folks' 740 when the trip meter was reset. Worked up the courage to take it apart and found the black gear completely stripped and disintegrating.

I believe it's normally the small gear (just visible on the bottom left of the large plastic pod) that normally breaks. Haven't seen this before.
Sites I've looked like (such as odometergear.com) say I'd need to count the number of teeth before ordering. But this thing has disintegrated completely. Was there a typical number of gears on these things? I note the speedo face has the number 0021 in small type on the bottom right. I read somewhere this is related to the number of teeth on something...
This is on an Australian 740 sedan (so speedo is in km/h).

Thanks for any help.
