Engine Temp 120-130

New owner of an amazon Estate, going through the car making it run well. When driving I noticed that the engine temp was boarding on the red area and going to about half red. So I flushed the coolant and changed the thermostat, still the same. My thoughts are that the temp gauge to off and I do have a replacement. I also got a laser thermometer so I can check the true temp. Where should I point the laser on the engine and what should the gauge be reading?
