Electric cooling fan 900 1993

The electric cooling fan shuts off when the engine is shut off. On hot days it will run after engine shut down IF the ignition key is in the auxiliary position. The fan will not run if the key is in the off position. Is the fan supposed to run, if needed, independent of the ignition key position? If so, what's the fix. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
