1992 960 shifts in and out of Winter Mode on its own 900 1992

Looking at buying a '92 965. The current owner (owned since new) says the tranny shifts at random into Winter mode. The price she's asking is dirt cheap so the car has some appeal to me.

I'm not familiar with the ZF tranny (or is it AW40?). What are the range of possible issues causing such a symptom?
