My '71 142E is finally back on the road 140-160

Nice car! The story made me cringe a lot, however.

The most common problem novice mechanics make is thinking the dearest thing you can find is the problem. Think cheap solutions 1st. If the pump works sometimes, then it will always make a noise if it get power. The roll pin on the pump's motor shaft breaks when something gets ingested & the motor will keep spinning.

FYI: The relay for the control unit has a blue sticker on it indicating a diode within. If you are upgrading that one, you need to but a big diode on it too.

I'd move the wires from that heavily used fuse to a separate fuse holder.
