I don't have much advice beyond what the others have said, but it is inspiring that you are wanting to learn car maintenance with your son. I think you win "Mom of the Year" in 2013!

I would start by buying a Haynes manual at your local auto parts store for the Volvo 240. It will be cheap, and has lots of good general advice. The Bentley repair manual is FAR more comprehensive, but you will have to order it and they can be pricey.
