Automatic shifter knob replacement problem 200 1992

The center button in the shifter has 4 prongs that expand and then hold the center piece on the shaft. There should be a spring under the center button. Pull the center button off using two hook tools at each opposite corner of center button, it is tough to remove and the spring may go flying. once the center button is off the rest just come apart. The broken ring of plastic may be what is left over from center button.
