Replacing a 122... 120-130 1966

To be brutally honest, I'd prefer a newer car for longer road trips. Unless you like the excitement that an old car lends to the proceedings.

Other than that, there's not much difference between a PV and a 122, same drivetrain (more or less), similar hardware elsewhere. I don't think either one is very suited to long road trips without an OD trans, and it is harder to put one in a PV, but not impossible. I'd also swap some disc brakes onto the front of the PV, the drums are perfectly fine in normal use, but it's fairly easy to overheat and fade them.

I think a 122 may be somewhat smoother and quieter, but either one of them is going to be noisy and buzzy compared to a newer car.

About the farthest I've driven my PV in a single trip is ~600 miles each way. I have to wear ear plugs doing that, but that's because of the loud exhaust on my car. It's fun in small doses, injurious in large doses. The original seats (which mine still has) aren't incredibly comfortable over that many miles, but the 122 seats are pretty similar unless you have a later model.
