Problem with distributor gear 444-544

Went to time my 544 and getting strange results from timing light.
Timing marks are showing up 180 deg. from where they should be.
So I pulled the distributor and rotated the engine to TDC, and it appears the
distributor gear shaft isn't in the right position. Tried to pull out the gear
shaft to reposition it but it won't come out. I'm pretty sure I used to be able
to just pull it out.
Any suggestions for getting it to come out? Not really wanting to have to pull the engine.
Or can I just use #4 (or which cylinder?) for timing and not worry about it?
It's been a while since I've done much mechanical work, so my troubleshooting and thought process is a little rusty.

thanks,
Steve
