89' 240 Clutch cable install .... Is there a secret to this? 200

What I find odd is that both IPD and FCP picture what I refer to as the Sachs cable. Regardless, the brand you state is aftermarket and it may just be too plain short. It is all because of that cast iron damper. But don't get rid of the damper. Get a cable that works.

The Gemo should not have any sort of covering over the sheath around the cable.

The Gemo sheath should look vaguely like flexible conduit with a spiral groove running it's entire length. That is what allows for the adjustment and more of it than the other type.

No...wait...the Gemo will have a partial flexible covering in two areas but not where you're adjusting.

Pictured below is the Gemo as we have come to know it. If you get the genuine article your problem will almost certainly be solved. But make sure it really is Gemo and it looks like the one in the pic. Aftermarket that looks like this, and there are some, are probably okay but why take a chance? You've had enough aggravation already.
