Fuel tank pickup hose 140-160 1972

Below is a shot of the inside of my 142's fuel tank. The pickup tube had what appeared to be some sort of plastic extension on the tube and a worn out screen on the end. Both broke off and were lying on the bottom of the tank.

My question is this - is the tube too far above the tank's bottom? While I don't want it too close to the bottom so it will suck in debris, I don't want to run out of gas when there's still some left in it.

It's hard to tell how far above the tank's bottom it is due to the angle of the picture but I'm guessing about two or three inches.
