Smoke coming out of automatic shifter, now car won't turn over or come out of park. 900

Hey All

I have a 91 940 Turbo Wagon

Just wondering if anybody has any ideas about this...I was stopped on the side of the road, pointed uphill with the car in drive but with my foot on the brake, as my friend sent a text message. I realized that the transmission was in drive and would be better off in park (not wanting to stress tranny), and just as I went to shift smoke started wafting out of the shifter housing up through the bristles into the cabin. The smoke smelled terrible, like burning clutch or brakes. My first thought was that my tranny was somehow burning up, so I turned the car off immediately. I waited a couple minutes and started it again...the engine came on, but very noisy, and the check engine light was on. The car would not shift out of park, and icky smoke started coming into the cabin again. I called AAA. 90 minutes later when the tow truck driver came, the starter would not engage, the car would still not shift out of park, but the icky smoke started pouring out of the shifter again when the key was turned to 'on' even though the engine was not running...this actually seemed like maybe good news, that the smoke was being caused by something electrical?! that is the hope anyway.

I had been getting whiffs of what smelled like burning brake or clutch all week from time to time, even though

The car was towed to a Volvo mechanic that I trust, just trying to get some info to calm my worries before his shop opens on Tuesday or later. The fact that the starter is out and that the smoke seems to be electrical has me hoping that my transmission is not screwed, maybe some shift lock snafu?

Thank you in advance,

Jess
