What is the best rear end ratio for gas mileage / B21ft / M46 200 1983

I want to increase gas mileage on my 1983 242 / B21ft / m46 by swapping out the rear end with one from a 240 diesel I found a diesel with a m46 tranny. Will it help or is not worth the hassle. I am not sure of differential ratios.
