1996 960 Transmission Problems 900 1996

Dear Mlarrycw3,

Hope you're well. Glad to hear that there was little debris in the filter!! That the fluid was "reddish brown" means that it was simply old and dirty. Once you've put 1,000 miles on it, re-flush with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

Because the engine is of an interference design - the valves hit the pistons, if the timing belt breaks - I'd change the timing belt and tensioner. That's the only way to be sure that both are in good order.

Having dodged a bullet in terms of the tranny, it would be horrendous for a timing belt failure to ruin the engine.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
