1993 240 w/ABS Front Brake Dust Shield Backing Plate question 200 1993

Hey folks,

Been a while since I've been on here due to being busy with life things not as fun as Volvos.

Anywho, my front driver's side wheel has developed quite a weird noise recently... sort of a tick that occurs loudest at low speeds (likely because I can't hear it at high speeds), but also sounds like a rubbery crunchy tick... like someone walking in rubber boots. I replaced the bearings and seals on that hub last spring and at that time removed the dust shield because it was no longer metal (completely rust) and it was contaminating the seal and inner bearing with rust and dirt. One day a couple of weeks ago the wheel started smoking while driving. My guess is that the seal was moving in place and caught on fire due to the friction heat somehow? Could this be because of the missing dust shield? aka the seal has nothing to 'seal' to so began rubbing on the hub spindle?

This could be a simple fix by ordering a new dust shield and installing but unfortunately Volvo and all aftermarket suppliers have discontinued the dust shields for 92-93 with ABS apparently! Dealer, IPD, FCP Groton, Tasca, etc all said they have no supply of these anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions, or experience modifying a non-ABS dust shield to fit on a car with ABS? The non-ABS shields are still available. I haven't tried the wreckers, but my guess is that the dust shields on those cars will be in the same condition as my old one as I'm located in a very rust prone area (Toronto, Canada).

OR is it more likely that my seal & bearing failure was caused by my poor installation of the new bearing/seal set? ..and that I don't really need a dust shield, just more practice with bearings (by installing another new set)!?
