exhaust manifold removal 200 1986

Hello, I need to replace the head gasket on my 86 240. In the past I've been able to pull the intake away from the head enough to change the intake gasket, but pretty much left everything intact.

I'm wondering if I should try something similar with the exhaust manifold? I have removed all the nuts from the studs, but now I can either separate the manifold from the downpipe, or leave together (no broken studs) and separate it farther down? Thanks ...
