"J" ODs do call for 80-90W gear oil. "D" types call for 30W. There are differing opinions on this, almost as many opinions as there are responders. All the M41 cars I've owned over 40+ years of Volvo ownership have performed flawlessly. I follow Volvo's recommendations as cited above. I just make sure the fluid level is always up there and I always use the clutch when engaging/disengaging the OD. No trouble, no failures.
