I keep getting mixed or contradictory messages on this topic.
I have a 1990 740. It probably has around 350,000+ miles on it, but I do not know. My ODO has gone on and off for years and I am certain I was the victim of an ODO rollback. (Dude went to jai for it, thankfully.)
I did not see the value of keeping any records when I was the moron who bought this car. I have since learned the error of my ways and have started. My memory is excellent and I can remember just about everything I have eve done to this car, except for this one thing: have I ever had the tranny fluid changed? The answer is that I do not know. :-(
I am, therefore assuming that since 1999 it has not been changed.
It has always shifted sort of hard and slowly. But it keeps working.
I wanted to flush the thing with the nifty IPD hose for that, but then read about how high mileage fluid should not be messed with.
However, today, in reviewing this topic, I am reading that you should not *flush* the system fully, but that you should still change the pan fluid and clean/change the filter.
Which is it? Do not touch at all, period? Or do not FLUSH, but still do the incomplete job of just the pan fluid?
Supposedly this will slowly incorporate the new fluid and not wreck the seals and such.
Also, which fluid should I use if I end up doing the pan/filter stuff? I have NO idea what is in there. I am still not sure exactly which tranny I have.
(I will be jacking up the car and rolling beneath it this afternoon to identify a lot of stuff and form plans for my fuel filter change that I intend to do tomorrow.
I am at a loss, here, guys...
