Hi Guys,
It's been a while! Due to the amazing financial advantages of a company car, I have sadly been brickless for several years. :/ I'm sort of past that now.
I just picked up a winter beater to help a friend out. It's a 1990 240 DL with 222k. It's been involved in a major rear-impact accident, so I was able to get it very cheap. Unfortunately, it was warmed up when I went to look at it, so I didn't get a chance to observe that it won't stay running on startup until it's warmed up. If I keep my foot on the gas, just enough to keep it above idle (or maybe even AT idle) it will stay running. Once it's a little bit warmed up, I can take my foot off and it will run just fine.
I have my suspicions about the air mass meter, but I figured I'd let somebody that's actually been through this on a Volvo make some suggestions. I wasn't able to find anything too helpful by searching, but I may have just been looking for the wrong keywords.
Suggestions on how to diagnose this? I only paid $450 for the car, so I'm trying to avoid spending much money on it. I would even consider leaving this situation alone, and just warming the car up manually, if it weren't for the fear of the unknown in a Michigan winter. I will be transporting this car about 100 miles away for my friend to drive this winter, I won't be able to fix this easily if it proves to be unworkable when it gets cold out. If it truly needs an air mass meter now, I'd rather put it in now- but the prospect of $150 that might not solve the problem isn't a positive in my mind.
Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions!
