Looking for advice - has occurred on cross-country road trips several times, with various "fixes":
DESCRIPTION:
-The car would lose power on the freeway. The loss of power felt like running on an empty tank -- spurts of power with little response to the gas pedal.
Always happened between 12 and 4, on sunny days,
Only seemed to occur after prolonged driving -- 3 or 4 hours without stopping.
Occurred only above 1,500 feet in elevation, although after this problem appeared, we were very cautious for the rest of our drive below 1500 feet.
It always started on highways, but would continue after pulling off until the car was shut down for 30 minutes or so.
REPAIRS:
The fuel filter, prepump, and regular pump were all replaced at various points in the journey, but the problem kept showing up.
Possibly unrelated: the car suddenly stalled at a stoplight one afternoon. It had trouble starting back up and driving. We were told it was likely the ignition module, and had it replaced. The car did not experience this exact problem after the repair, but still had problems with the high-speed stalling.
NOTES:
A/C or general electrical use did not seem to affect recurrence.
The car generally runs cool. We noticed that the problem only happened when the thermostat was closer to the "dot" than normal. But it never showed signs of overheating.
The ignition coil did not show any signs of overheating or melting.
