2-3-1.... 700 1990

You can do a quick timing belt check by rotating the crankshaft to TDC and removing the upper timing cover. The camshaft timing mark should be as shown in the FAQ.

An original in-tank Regina system pump that lasts 142,000 miles is probably near the end of its life. The original pump was made by AC Delco for Volvo. The Volvo replacement part number is 3507736. Tasca Volvo has it online for $102.

FCP Euro has a 3507736 replacement from Pro Parts Sweden for $80.
Rockauto has a Delphi FE0324 replacement at Wholesaler closeout pricing for $48. Be sure to get a new filter sock for the fuel pump inlet.

The pump has to be for a Rex Regina system. The in-tank pump for a 2-pump Bosch system would not work.

When the pump quit on my 1991 740 at 150K, I wanted to find something quick so I went to a local auto parts store that sold mostly to auto repair pros. We looked through an AC Delco catalog until we found a pump that looked identical - it was an AC Delco EP377. It worked fine although I think it had a different electrical connector. I soldered the power wires directly to the connector pins on the pump. That pump was still working 170,000 miles later.

If it sounds like your pump still works, then find a way to check the fuel pressure after turning the key but before running the starter. The pump may still be OK, although it is not likely to last much longer if is original with 142K miles.

Also look at the crank position sensor on top of the torque converter housing behind the cylinder head. They are known to fail because the cable sheath degrades and water gets into the sensor.

An inductive pickup timing light on the #1 spark plug wire could tell you if the ignition system is firing the spark plugs at the right time when the engine is cranked.
