M-40 INSTALLATION PROBLEM 444-544

You don't say which engine you have, so I am going to assume you have a B16.

The B16 bellhousing has a different bolt pattern for the transmission than the B18 and B20 engines.

Volvo used a special M40 case that only fits B16 bellhousings on the later B16 equipped cars.

You might be able to transfer the internal parts if your replacement M40 uses the smaller rear bearing.

I might be able to determine if your replacement M40 transmission has a small bearing if you can find and read the part number tag that should be riveted to the transmission near the transmission mount.

The part number should be 6 digits long and sometimes has a "-" and a 7th number. The 7th number is a check digit and is no longer used.

You can also tell by counting the number of splines on the output shaft which requires removing the rear output flange.
