Is the winshieldglass bonded to the cars sill or molding? 200 1991

I recently removed my leaking windshield discovering that the molding was Urethaned to the car and the glass to the molding. I always thought that the glass was supposed to be directly bonded to the car sill. The Pinkerton windshield was installed by a respected local shop about six years back.
While removing the glass I did notice that just a little pressure at the top/center of the windshield easily broke the seal.
I expected the leak to be caused by rust, but found only a couple of small spots that needed little more than just sanding.
The molding was a real issue getting off the glass. It was also reinforced with an aluminum or tin strip. The molding conformed so well to the windshield that I suspect that it may have come from Pinkerton that way and not the shop.
I plan on using another nearby shop that doesn't charge extra for home service, but am concerned that there generic molding may leak as well.
Is there an OEM 1991 240 molding I should be using or was the glass just improperly installed six years ago..
