Tach Install Unsuccessful 200 1980

1980 242.

So I bought a 1975-1980 tach on eBay, and the minute I could get a little time I excitedly popped off my instrument cluster, installed the tach on the board and started hunting for the other end of the fabled red and white coil wire to get her running.

There is definitely a red and white wire running off the coil and off into the firewall, but the only red and white wire I could find behind the cluster was already seated in the primary wiring harness (terminator looks like the cylinders of a revolver). After impatiently poking around further and trying some half-assed unsuccessful continuity tests with my multimeter, I said "what the heck" and pulled the red and white wire out of the harness, stuck a spade connector on it, and plugged it in.

Needless to say, this didn't work and now I am both remorseful for having done slop work and also unsure of how to proceed thoughtfully.

Any suggestions?
