Fuel tank feed tube 444-544

After replacing the AC glassbowl fuel pump, we've realized that the pump wasn't receiving fuel because the tank wasn't sending any fuel. The pump was working the entire time :(

It turns out that as long as tank was full the fuel was able to flow directly into the fuel line. When the tank level dropped after our initial run of the engine, the rusted/broken feeder pipe in the tank wasn't there to send any fuel into the line.

My mechanic is going to remove the tank to weld something to replace this part. Has anyone had any experience with this type of issue? Is there a part that I could buy to replace the feeder? I'm relaying this info so I didn't actually see the issue myself.

The tank itself is in good shape and was reconditioned during the car's restoration.
